On Wine

Affordable Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine

by Fred McMillin

Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Which Cab is fairest of them all?

Global Gourmet reader Mrs. Christine Silver asked what Cab under $20 has scored highest recently in my Fort Mason (S.F.City College) classes?

At higher prices we would expect Napa Valley to dominate. Let°s see if that is the case for this lower price range? Here are the 14 best we have sipped.

On Wine: Rankings
Affordable Cabernet Sauvignons
14th Jacob's Creek (Wyndham), South Australia, 2002, $13
13th Trinchero Family, Lake County, 2004, $12
12th Lockwood Vineyards, Monterey County, 2005, $14
11th Daniel Gerhs Winery, Santa Barbara County, 2005, $17
10th Valley of the Moon, Sonoma County, 2005, $19
9th Kenwood Vineyards, Sonoma County, 2005, $18
8th Fat Cat Wines (Bronco), California, 2005, $10
7th Napa Ridge Winery, Napa Valley, 2004, $12
6th Lockwood Vineyards, Monterey County, 2004, $19
5th Valley of the Moon, Sonoma County, 2001, $19
4th Angove's (Trinchero), Australia, 2004, $19
3rd Barefoot Cellars, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County, 2001, $17
2nd Hahn Estates, Central Coast, 2005, $14
And the winner is...
1st Sobon Estate, Amador County, 2003, $15

Conclusion

No Napa dominance here. Sonoma had four on the list to Napa's one.

And a Final Wine Smile

Ouch! I saw this review of a book I liked. The book: Wine for Dummies. The review: "It is."
