I told the witch doctor I was in love with you.
I told the witch doctor I was in love with you.
And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do.
He told me...
Ooh ee ooh ah ah,
Ting tang walla walla bing bang.
Ooh ee ooh ah ah,
Ting tang walla walla bang bang.
— Alvin and The Chipmunks
Half the fun of a Halloween party is putting the spin on things—creating an atmosphere that lets loose the imagination.
For this segment of Black Magic Month, I found inspiration in Cook, Eat, Cha Cha Cha, the cookbook from San Francisco's spirited restaurant, Cha, Cha, Cha, located in the heart of Haight-Ashbury. The restaurant specializes in bold, spicy New World creations, and is adorned throughout with shrines and altars to the saint-gods of Santeria—the mystical blending of Catholicism and the ancient Yoruban religion, common to Haiti and the Caribbean islands.
I've adapted some of the recipe names to fit our Halloween theme. I chose these particular recipes because they capture the spirit of the evening with their mambo-jambo flavors and their consistency with our the black and orange-gold color scheme.
Musical Selection: Witch Doctor, as sung by David Seville's Alvin and The Chipmunks
