Just as New York's 21 Club offered sanctuary to well-heeled Easterners during Prohibition, so too did the Embassy Club flourish on the West Coast. The speakeasy par excellence, located on Hollywood Boulevard, catered almost exclusively to the stars of the day. No wonder they felt at home there—the interiors were done by the set designer who later did Rick's American Cafe and other backdrops for Casablanca. The Embassy gave the world several memorable cocktails, the most famous of which is probably Satan's Whiskers (page 79 of the book). We think this one, which bears the club's name, is also worth reviving. We commend it for redirecting spirits most commonly found in hot Yuletide grogs to the ice cold precincts of the cocktail shaker.
3/4 oz. brandy
3/4 oz. Cointreau
3/4 oz. Jamaican rum
Juice of 1 lime, strained
Dash of Angostura bitters
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice. Shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a twist of lime.
