Spiced Shoo-fly Pie

Makes one 9-inch pie

 

One 9-inch unbaked pie shell

Crumbs:
1/4 cup shortening
1-1/2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar

Work the above ingredients together and set aside.

 

Liquid:
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
Pinch of ginger, cinnamon and cloves
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup molasses
3/4 cup hot water

Mix all ingredients together until well blended.

Into an unbaked 9-inch pie shell, combine the crumbs and liquid in alternate layers with crumbs on bottom and top. Bake 15 minutes at 450 degrees F., then 20 minutes at 350 degrees, F. Serve after cooling, or warm with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
