The Great Hot Sauce Book

hot sauce book

After you clear the tears and your heart beat goes down, you look at the label on the hot sauce bottle that says habaneros, onions, vinegar, garlic, and various spices. What is it about the "various spices" that makes these sauces so different and life so interesting? Jennifer Trainer Thompson, a premiere collector of hot sauces and the "Queen of Hot," according to the Associated Press-shares the answers in The Great Hot Sauce Book.

Two years ago, Ten Speed Press/Celestial Arts and Jennifer created a best-selling hot sauce poster series that to date has sold over 40,000 copies. The Great Hot Sauce Book figuratively and literally gives the poster three dimensions. Formatted in the style of the bestselling Ten Speed titles The Great Salsa Book, The Great Chile Book, and The Great Exotic Fruit Book, The Great Hot Sauce Book features color photographs and spicy descriptions of over 300 sauces taken from Jennifer's collection. Jennifer assigns each death-defying sauce a heat scale rating while regaling the reader with lore.

For spicy food lovers, The Great Hot Sauce Book is the definitive guide to hot sauces. The book contains Caribbean sauces, Louisiana sauces, Mexican and Southwestern sauces, sauces from other continents (France's Candido Piri Piri or Slovenia's Adriatic Hot Ajvar), domestic goddesses (including Capital Punishment, which is legal in all 50 states) the "Politically Incorrects" (you won't believe these!) and the "Screamers"-hot sauces that force even an arson-loving tongue like Jennifer's to call 911. For kitchen cooks looking for the right degree of heat to ignite their families with, this is a great resource. Some of these sauces are so hot, they have to be doled with an eyedropper. This book also helps the reader differentiate subtle flavors, spices and fruits beneath the fire. Whether or not a sauce is preservative-free is also mentioned.

In addition, Jennifer offers over 25 recipes made from these hot sauces including, Howlin ' Hot Chicken Papaya Coleslaw, Shrimp Wontons with Peanut Dipping Sauce, Jump Up and Kiss My Whole Roasted Chicken, and Smoke Chipotle Rubbed Pork Loin. An appendix of sources provides addresses for hot sauce shops, mail-order sources, hot sauce of the month clubs and hot sauce collectors.

If you can't handle the hot, you'll still love the names and the clever bottle designs, including Scorned Woman (she comes in a black bag) and Armageddon (which will take you to the end of the world, guaranteed.) This book will give you lnner Beauty, make you wonder about Dave's Insanity, and leave you begging for your Last Rites. Try them all without any repercussions for your mouth!
